Becoming a Freelance Writer

Hi, my name’s Izzy and I’m trying to become a freelance writer. I’m an aspiring writer/journalist/freelancer/I don’t really know and I’m still trying to figure it out, and have been toying with the idea of pursuing freelance writing for a while. The trouble is, I have no idea where to start. In 2025 I’ve made it my goal to give the freelance writing thing a good crack and the first logical step in my mind was to create a website. After spending £100 and the entire evening clicking around randomly on WordPress with absolutely no idea what I’m doing, I’m beginning to regret this decision. But I’ve spent £100 now so I’m going to have to make it work one way or another.

I’m writing this purely because WordPress is telling me to. It never really occurred to me to document my journey to becoming a freelance writer, but as every reddit thread I’ve seen says to post on your blog 2-3 times a week, this is apparently the path I’m now on. The goal is actually to be a lifestyle writer – I love food, drink, travel and the like (but mostly food), and currently this is the area I’d love to end up in. My issue is that I’m such a perfectionist that I can’t bring myself to publish anything in those areas that isn’t the absolute best it could possibly be, so realistically publishing something on my website 2-3 times a week to my obscenely nitpicking standards is unachievable. Documenting my journey to becoming a freelance writer, however, is something I don’t really care about so therefore I don’t mind if the 2-3 posts I share are absolute dogshit. Does that make sense? I’m glad I can’t see the quizzical looks and violent head shaking right now.

I have experience in writing and currently work for a lifestyle magazine, but the freelancing world is something completely new to me and I can’t stress enough how much I genuinely don’t know what I’m doing. Probably not the best advertisement for myself but I’m going for the whole ‘transparency’ thing hoping it’ll make this more interesting for anyone that happens to come across it. So truly I don’t know what I’m doing, but I’m hoping that this process will slowly help me to figure it out. So far I’ve landed on the theme for my WordPress website, signed up to a couple of freelance job boards and written this rubbish blog post, but you have to start somewhere I guess. Hopefully my next update should be a little more enlightening.
